US Mint 2010 Silver Proof Set

The 14-coin US Mint 2010 Silver Proof Set launched Thursday, August 26, 2010, at noon Eastern time. The annual silver set is priced at $56.95 and will do very well, since it is an always popular product for coin collectors.

The United States Mint has been selling approximately 700,000 of the sets since 2008. Each of those years, they were launched during the middle of the summer and sold into the following year.

The chart below shows the launch and end dates for the prior three years as well as their last reported sales figures.

Year Total Sales Price # of Coins Launch Date End Date

US Mint 2008 Silver Proof Set 774,874 $44.95 14 Aug. 26, 2008 July 17, 2009
US Mint 2007 Silver Proof Set 875,050 $44.95 14 Aug. 23, 2007 Dec. 19, 2008

Last year’s set was unique, because it contained more coins. Those extra coins included four "Bicentennial" Lincoln cents instead of the traditional Lincoln "Memorial" cent, and six 2009 quarters that featured DC & the US territories instead of five quarters from the State Quarter Program that ended in 2008.

Although the 2010 Silver Proof Set includes 14 proof-quality coins, it is $4 more than last year’s set. One of the main reasons for the price difference is the extra cost of silver. As of this writing, the spot price of silver is around $19 an ounce. It was $6 cheaper when last year’s silver sets launched. The 2010 set has a total of 1.34 ounces of silver, which translates into about $25.50 of the precious metal.

The coins consisting of 90 percent silver include the dime, half-dollar, and five 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters™. The remaining coins are proof clad. Each bears the "S" mint mark denoting they were produced at the mint facility in San Francisco.

The following coins are in the set:

  • 2010-S Hot Springs National Park Silver Quarter (Arkansas)
  • 2010-S Yellowstone National Park Silver Quarter (Wyoming)
  • 2010-S Yosemite National Park Silver Quarter (California)
  • 2010-S Grand Canyon National Park Silver Quarter (Arizona)
  • 2010-S Mt. Hood National Forest Silver Quarter (Oregon)
  • 2010-S Kennedy Silver Half-Dollar
  • 2010-S Roosevelt Silver Dime
  • 2010-S Fillmore Presidential $1
  • 2010-S Pierce Presidential $1
  • 2010-S Buchanan Presidential $1
  • 2010-S Lincoln Presidential $1
  • 2010-S Native American Dollar
  • 2010-S Jefferson Nickel
  • 2010-S Lincoln Shield Cent
