Last year’s coin introduced what turned into at least a two-year series as the Royal Canadian Mint in April 2012 began selling 2012 Maple Leaf Forever Silver Coins.

Each year’s $10 silver coin is composed of 99.99% fine silver to a weight of one-half ounce, with a diameter of 34 mm and unique finishes.

"A three-fold combination of different finishes. The design (relief or raised area) includes both brilliant and mirrored surfaces and the background (field) are striated using laser etching that results in a matte finish," the Royal Canadian Mint advertises.

The coin’s central reverse theme or design is a trilogy of maple leaves "inspired by the airy design that has graced Canada’s one-cent circulation coin since 1937," notes the Mint. Inscriptions on the reverse include CANADA, 10 DOLLARS, FINE SILVER, 2011, ARGENT PUR, and the designer’s initials DA for Debbie Adams.

As is traditional, the obverse has Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II and DG REGINA.

Coin collectors may purchase the 2011 $10 Maple Leaf Forever Silver Coin directly from the Royal Canadian Mint website at www.mint.ca for a price of $34.95 CAD. The Mint states the coin is GST/HST exempt. There are no stated ordering limits, but orders must be in before July 21, 2012. The authorized mintage limit is 100,000.

Coins are encapsulated for protection and come shipped within a maroon flock-line clamshell case that is accompanied by a serialized certificate.
