The 2011 Australian Koala Silver Coins are now readily available from the Perth Mint. The popular series of strikes mark their fifth year since first introduced to the coin buying public.

2011 Koala Silver Coin

This silver coins series consists of four different sizes of 99.9 fine silver strikes including 1/2 ounce, 1 ounce, 10 ounce as well as a massive 1 kilo coin. On the reverse, the Perth places an annually changing design of one of Australia’s most famous marsupials – the koala.

The 2011 design shows an adult koala resting in the fork of a eucalyptus tree along with its offspring. The traditional inscriptions of the year, the size of the coin and "999 SILVER" join a new descriptive inscription of "AUSTRALIAN KOALA" which has never before been included on the series. The Perth Mint’s historic ‘P’ mintmark is also shown on the reverse.

Each of these Australian Koala silver coins are considered legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965 and thus contain a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on their obverse. This effigy is the work of Ian Rank-Broadley and is joined by the inscriptions of "AUSTRALIA," "ELIZABETH II" and the denomination of the strike – "30 DOLLARS," "10 DOLLARS," "1 DOLLAR" or "50 CENTS."

The Australian government guarantees each strike for weight and purity.

All four Koala silver coins may be obtained through the Perth Mint’s distribution and coin dealer network.

About the Perth Mint

The Perth Mint, wholly-owned by the State Government of Western Australia, is the official issuer of the Australian Federal Government’s Gold and Silver Bullion Coin Program. The facility originally opened as the Perth branch of Britain’s Royal Mint in 1899 to take advantage of the local gold resources of the region and continued to operate under the Royal Mint until 1970 when ownership was transferred to the state of Western Australia.

The Perth, under the guidance of its parent organization known as the Gold Corporation, serves as Australia’s only LBMA accredited gold refinery and also refines considerable amounts of silver.

In 2003, The Perth Mint officially opened an 8,400 square metre state-of-the-art manufacturing facility next door to its original limestone building. Dominating the Mint’s heritage precinct, these two important buildings are powerful symbols of more than 100 years of minting excellence in Western Australia.
