In an email update Thursday, the US Mint invited customers to join its subscription service by January 4 to receive the products automatically following their launch. A delay after the 4th likely means a new subscription would kick-in only for 2012 issues, and require collectors to order each of the 2011 sets when they are individually released.

The 2011 Silver Proof Set, which is officially named "United States Mint Silver Proof Set™," will launch on January 25.

7 of the 14 coins are composed of 90 percent silver. The remaining are standard clad proofs.

The set features five newly designed America the Beautiful Quarters® which are struck in 90 percent silver. These include the coins honoring Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, Glacier National Park in Montana, Olympic National Park in Washington, Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi and Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma.

Additional coins in the 2011 Silver Proof Set that have the 90 percent precious metal content include the 2011-S Kennedy Half Dollar and the 2011-S Roosevelt Dime.

The non-silver proof coins include the 2011-S Lincoln Cent, the 2011-S Jefferson Nickel, the 2011-S Native American Dollar, and the four Presidential Dollars bearing the portraits of former Presidents Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, and James A. Garfield.

All the coins are minted in San Francisco and bear the "S" mintmark.

The US Mint has not announced prices. The 2010 Silver Proof Set is $56.95, which launched on August 26, 2010, and is expected to remain available until the end of next year. The new set should have a price tag that is the same or slightly more. The metal is substantially higher today as compared to when the 2010 sets launched, so a price increase would not be a complete surprise. Each set includes 1.34 ounces of silver. The precious metal is hovering around $29.25 as of this writing. It was around $19 when the 2010’s were issued.

The early January release is a part of the US Mint plan to make its popular annual products available for more occasions throughout the year — birthdays, earlier holidays, etc.

As for the other two major annual offerings, the US Mint said it will launch the clad Proof Set on January 11 and the uncirculated Mint Set on February 8.

The clad Proof Set is exactly like the silver, excluding the precious metals’ composition of the coins.

The uncirculated Mint Set includes 28 coins in brilliant finishes. These coins are split evenly between the US Mint production facilities in Denver and Philadelphia.

  1. Eric Hernandez says:

In my email from the Mint concerning my pending shippment of the Silver Proof Set the price was listed as $67.95. This is a considerable markup from the 2010 set however as previously stated in the article, the cost of silver has increase as well. I dont know how much more customers will be willing to pay for such sets seeing as how once you factor in the shipping costs, the sets total $72.90 which is pretty steep.
