This gilded coin showcases the same obverse and reverse imagery that is found on other 2012-dated Koala coins released by the Perth Mint. However, the koala found in this design is highlighted with 24-karat gold, marking the fifth such annual release in the series. The first appeared in 2008 which was one year after the debut of the related Koala bullion coins. Both the bullion and the gilded coins have annually changing reverse designs depicting the animal.

The koala is a marsupial native to Australia giving it an iconic relationship to the country. The creature lives almost entirely on a diet of eucalypt leaves found in the forested coastal regions of eastern and southern Australia.
