That year not only saw the high relief debut, but it also marked the first time the kangaroo coins were struck from .999 fine silver. Previous to that point, the Perth Mint produced kangaroo coins from gold.

Collectors rushed to obtain coins of the new precious metal series leading to a quick sell-out of the 2010 high relief. Its follow-up in 2011 also proved popular, leading the Perth to issue this third strike of the program.

In order to obtain the high relief images featured on the silver coin, the Perth produces each with concave surfaces on both the obverse and reverse. This ensures an optimum flow of metal as each is struck with the die resulting in a coin with an enhanced level of detail owing to its increased relief.

Each silver coin is struck as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. They carry a face value of AUD $1.

The Perth Mint places each silver coin in a display case and ships it inside an illustrated shipper along with a numbered certificate of authenticity. That certificate indicates the maximum worldwide mintage of the coin which is just 20,000.

The 2012 Australian Kangaroo High Relief Silver Coin may be purchased directly from the Perth Mint for AUD $100.00.
