2012 Silver Proof Set Improves, Eagle Coin Sales Fall

This year’s Silver Proof Set, Quarters Silver Proof Set, and the Star-Spangled Banner Bicentennial Silver Dollar Set were collector’s favorites last week, according to the latest tally of U.S. Mint weekly sales. The 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle would normally be among the top sellers, but it remained "temporarily unavailable for product repricing."

2012 Silver Proof Set

In the number one spot was the 2012 Silver Proof Set, by a lot. The United States Mint received 5,696 orders for it, while the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set sat in second place with 763 orders. Not far behind was the Star-Spangled Banner Bicentennial Silver Dollar Set. It gained 675. Of those three products, only the Silver Proof Set outsold its previous weekly increase, which was 3,799.

Even though 2012-W Proof Silver Eagles have been unavailable for more than a week, their sales total moved. It went down by 44, from 492,789 to 492,745. Possible reasons include problem orders, cancellations and returns.

Their suspension should be over soon, given the fact that the U.S. Mint added a pricing notice to the Federal Register revealing a price that is $5 lower. The newly published price for the Proof Silver Eagle was $54.95.

While sales of the proof coin have been halted, sales of the bullion version have been on the rise. The U.S. Mint’s network of Authorized Purchasers scooped up 465,000 Silver Eagles over that past week, compared to 248,000 previously. July’s new total rose to 1,468,000 and is now 22,000 away from surpassing February’s total of 1,490,000. With the latest increase, the new year-to-date figure hit 18,860,000.
