Silver Eagles notched their second best June. Their sales pace remains on track for a new annual record

The United States Mint indicates total sales of the .999 fine bullion Silver Eagles reached 3,275,000 in June, an often seasonally-challenged month. Those sales were recorded as the London Fix for silver fell as low as $18.61.

At 3,275,000, June 2013 established itself as second best June and the seventeenth best month ever for the American Silver Eagle series that debuted in 1986. The top 20 months for the program are shown in the chart below:

June sales were actually down from May by 183,500. This equates to a 5.3% decline which follows a 15.4% drop seen from the number recorded in April. Despite these declines, 2013 easily remains on track for a record holder in its own right.

All six months of 2013 rank in the top-twenty for monthly Silver Eagle sales. These levels are getting set in spite of a rationing program, as established by the Mint in January. Though the first half of 2013, a whopping 25,043,500 have sold. If the sales pace continues, 2013 will go down in the record books as the best year ever for silver coins. That title is currently held by 2011 in which 39,868,500 were ordered. That year, it took until July 29, 2011 for the coins to reach 25 million.

Even if the total does not reach first place in the remaining six months, this year has already attained a top-level status. It currently stands as the fifth best ever year for the program.
