First, the investor product, containing five ounces of .999 fine silver, became available to the US Mint’s network of Authorized Purchasers (APs) on Monday, Nov. 4, 2013. APs are an exclusive group of buyers who order bullion coins in bulk and resell them for a few percentage points over the spot price of every ounce of precious metal they contain.

Initial first-day orders for the Mount Rushmore 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin totaled 6,000, which is where sales stand as of late Wednesday, Nov 6, 2013. Sales will continue to rise over the coming weeks and months, better aligning with totals of the other 2013 ATB silver bullion coins.

As for those coins and their latest weekly sales, Fort McHenry gained 1,000 to 29,200 while Great Basin and Perry’s Victory held steady at 27,200 and 26,200 respectively. The first five ounce design, for White Mountain, already sold out at an even 35,000.

The Mount Rushmore bullion coin’s numismatic or collector counterpart debuted at noon ET on Thursday, Nov. 7. Collectors can purchase the 2013-P Mount Rushmore 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin directly from the United States Mint at www.usmint.gov/catalog. Its price is $154.95. An upcoming Silver Coins Today article will discuss this coin in much more detail.

As a side note, Mount Rushmore quarters launched on Monday, the same day as the 5 ounce bullion coin. The US Mint is selling circulating-quality versions of them in bags and rolls.

Numismatic Silver Coin Sales
