2013-W Proof Silver Eagle Tops 800K, Sellout Nearing?

Sales of United Sates Mint collector products soared through the week ended Sunday, Oct. 20, the latest figures from the bureau show.

The Mint’s newly delivered 2013 Holiday Catalog must have provided some support, as gains were wide. Silver coins, gold coins, core annual proof sets and core annual uncirculated sets all logged higher, better sales. When comparing sales stats, 145 of 202 products notched higher week-over-week increases. Across all the silver coins and silver sets, US Mint weekly sales advanced by 25,820 units compared to the previous 18,586.

Leading sales among silver coins was the 2013-W Proof Silver Eagle with a 14,243 weekly jump for a new total of 812,125 since its release on Jan. 24. For the full picture, its individual sales must be combined with the 2013 Congratulation Set’s sales of 4,688, bringing the proof Silver Eagle’s total to 816,813.

Its hurdle over 800,000 is mindful of last year’s issue since it went off sale shortly after topping the same milestone. The 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle launched on April 12, 2012 and sold out on Nov. 13, 2012 at 819,217. The Silver Eagle was also included in the 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set that had sales of 50,169, bringing its total mintage up to 869,386.

Also, the 2011-W Proof Silver Eagle was released on June 30, 2011 and sold out on Nov. 22, 2011. Its sales reached 850,000, though another 100,000 must be added for 950,000 because it was also packaged within the 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set.

Excluding the last couple of years, proof Silver Eagles have tended to be available through December and purchased in abundance for holiday gifts.
