Available tax free and shipped free throughout Canada and the United States, the proof quality coin is minted from 99.99% fine silver to a weight of 15.87 grams. Its mintage was brought down 10,000 to 90,000 from that of the first release in the program, the 2014 $50 for $50 Polar Bear Silver Coin. That coin debuted in April. Its sales as of this writing are at 77% of the 100,000.

The Royal Canadian Mint’s related $20 for $20 series kicked off in 2012. Thirteen have been released and all but the most recent 2014 coins have sold out — the second 2014 coin is at 96% of sales and the third 2014 coin is at 85% of sales. The $100 for $100 series followed in 2013 at a slower release cycle with three silver coins issued so far with one of those launching earlier this year. All of them have sold out.

Collectors have been drawn to each of the series due to their unique and changing designs, their silver content and their prices since coins sell at their legal tender values. $50 for $50 silver coins have a melt value equal to just over one-half troy ounce of silver.
