2014 American Eagle Silver Coins Hit Sales of 3,464,000 in 5 Days

Making their debut on US Mint sales charts are the new 2014 American Eagle silver coins. Over the last few years, January has been one of the hottest months of the year for the coins, with January 2013 setting the all-time monthly record at 7,498,000.

So far in 2014, the Mint’s authorized purchasers (APs) picked up 3,464,000 Silver Eagles between the launch on Monday, January 13 and Friday, January 17. The initial report from the Mint was that the APs ordered 3,180,500 on the first day.

Because the coins are so popular and the silver blanks needed to make them limited, a weekly allocation process is in place to prevent temporary suspensions. This week the allocation was set at 3,575,000, leaving 111,000 left. These leftovers will be added to next week’s allocation, which will be much lower at around 500,000 – 600,000 coins.

In the numismatic arena, US Mint sales slowed across all silver coin related products. While demand for the 2014-P Civil Rights Act of 1964 Silver Dollars slid, they remained the most popular sellers in the numismatic silver category, with cumulative sales of 11,860. Broken out, 8,513 proof and 3,347 uncirculated silver dollars sold.
