Never before has the United States Mint produced curved coins with these new releases featuring a concave obverse and a convex reverse. The silver coins are issued as part of the larger National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Program and are available in both proof and uncirculated qualities.

This is a profile view of the proof silver dollar. It shows the curvature of the coin. The dome measures 0.150 inches in height, the largest of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coins. Domes of the gold coins are 0.085 high while the clad coins have a height of 0.058 inches.

The commemorative program also includes $5 gold coins, these silver coins and clad half-dollars. They each showcase a common obverse. A national design competition was created by the United States Mint to find the winning image.

"Baseball and the United States Mint – two American treasures – are teaming up to produce a historic one-of-a-kind coin program," said United States Treasurer Rosie Rios in announcing the Baseball Coin Design Competition. "Baseball is a touchstone in American history, and the United States Mint connects Americans to their history through coins. The Treasury Department is proud to be part of this commemorative coin program."

The winning design depicts a baseball glove and is the work of artist Cassie McFarland of San Luis Obispo, California. Obverse inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2014.

A common reverse, as designed by Don Everhart, is also found on the commemorative coins which show the likeness of a baseball similar to those used in Major League Baseball. Reverse inscriptions read: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DOLLAR.

Don Everhart sculpted both baseball coin designs — his reverse and McFarland’s obverse.

Ordering

The 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coins go on sale beginning at Noon (Eastern) today, March 27, 2014. When issued, they may be ordered directly from the United States Mint. Ordering options include the Mint’s website, through this page, or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).

As directed by law, the maximum mintage for the silver coins has been established at 400,000 across all product options. The same authorizing law dictates that surcharges of $10 will be collected on the sale of each coin with proceeds forwarded to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, an independent not-for-profit educational institution, with the funds used to aid in operations.
