2014 Silver Proof Set, Shenandoah Bullion Coin Mark Sales Starts

Two silver coin products hit the market and their early sales are showing strength. First, the United States Mint launched the 2014 Silver Proof Set on April 29, and collectors scooped up more early than last year. Second, the five-ounce Shenandoah National Park Silver Bullion Coin debuted on May 6, and its start is stronger than the opening of the first 2014-dated five-ounce silver coin.

This year’s Silver Proof Set with 14 coins and 7 of them in 90% silver opened with sales 183,520, which is higher than the 166,710 start of the 2013 Silver Proof Set. Subscriptions likely played a larger part in the early numbers since subscribers received a 10% discount, paying $48.55 for the 2014 Silver Proof Set instead of the normal $53.95.

Speaking of sets, last year’s 2013 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set sold out on Thursday. Its sales bumped up 223 to 48,334. Collectors will have to wait longer for this year’s version since its release date is still listed by the U.S. Mint as "To be Determined."

In silver bullion coins, the U.S. Mint this week started selling the Shenandoah 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin to its exclusive network of Authorized Purchasers (APs). These silver investor coins will soon make their way into the coin world via wholesalers, precious metal companies, and coin dealers. Sales of the silver coins by Tuesday hit 14,800 and moved up to 15,200 by Wednesday. This year’s first issue honoring Great Smoky Mountains National Park opened at 10,500.

Next week, on May 15, the U.S. Mint will directly sell the collector version, the Shenandoah National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. Its price is $154.95 with subscribers paying $139.45. And upcoming Silver Coins Today article will discuss this coin in more detail.
