Monthly sales of 2016 American Silver Eagle Bullion Coins were lowest since December 2013.

Summer slowdowns are typical for U.S. bullion coins. July was typical of the time, unlike last year when Silver Eagle sales blasted off in June, July and August. Demand fell to such a level this month that the U.S. Mint stopped allocating their sales. In fact, just 175,000 sold this week — the lowest weekly total of 2016.

For the month, the U.S. Mint recorded sales of 1.37 million coins, marking a drop of 51.7% from June’s 2,837,500 and a decline of 75.2% from July 2015 when they reached 5,529,000. The monthly total was the lowest since December 2013.

For the January to July period, sales hit 27,620,500 — a tiny improvement of 1.1% above sales through the same seven months in 2015 when 27,315,000 sold. By the end of last year, bullion 2015 American Silver Eagles scored an annual record of 47 million coins.

Five Ounce Bullion Coin Sales

Five-ounce bullion sales came up empty in July. Three 2016 issues have been released to date. The first two sold out by May, leaving only the newest Harpers Ferry coin available. It has not climbed passed its 34,200 increase in June, its debut month. The U.S. Mint announced a late August release for the next coin in the series, sending the following to their authorized purchasers:

"This is to inform you that the United States Mint will begin accepting orders for the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin — Theodore Roosevelt National Park on Monday, August 29, 2016.

In the meantime, the United States Mint has inventories of America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin — Harpers Ferry National Historical Park available for sale."

Collector Coin Sales

In numismatic sales, demand was about typical during the first full week of availability for the 2016-P Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, following its release on July 14. Other silver collectibles on consumers’ minds were the 2016 Silver Proof Set and proof silver dollars commemorating the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

The collector version of the Harpers Ferry coin rose by 904 to hit 16,044. This new five ounce piece costs $149.95. It was the third best seller in the silver numismatic category.

The 2016 Silver Proof Set maintained momentum, gaining 2,671 in this round compared to 2,897 previously. The nearest competitor was the 2016 Proof NPS Silver Dollar, which added 1,127 to its total.
