2016 American Silver Eagle Sales Soar in January, Scoring 4th Best Month

Sales of the United States Mint’s best-selling product, the bullion American Silver Eagle, surged to 5,954,500 in January.

This milestone marks the highest monthly sales since January 2013 when a record 7,498,000 sold, and it makes January 2016 the 4th top-selling month in the Silver Eagle’s history which started in 1986.

One million coins were allotted this week by the U.S. Mint, due to continued rationing, and 95.5% of them were claimed. Leaving 45,500 on the table, it was the first time this year that the Mint’s Authorized Purchasers did not order all that they could. This year’s issue debuted on January 11. The Mint made available 4 million during the first week of sales and then 1 million last week, like this week.

More silver products will be in the news next week. The Mint on Monday will launch the first bullion 2016-dated America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Coin, which features artwork honoring Shawnee National Forest in Illinois.

Also launching Monday are commemorative Mark Twain Silver Dollars. Individual proof and uncirculated versions will be available at introductory prices. Proofs will be $45.95 and uncirculated strikes will be $44.95 until March 2 when their prices rise by $5 each.
