Cumberland Gap of Kentucky is commemorated on a five-ounce silver coin launching this Thursday, May 5, 2016.

2016-P Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin

The 2016-P Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin goes on sale at noon ET on the 5th for $149.95.

Issued by the United States Mint, the collectible is the second 2016-dated release in the series America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins. It is the thirty-second overall from the U.S. Mint’s program, which depicts designs of national parks on 3-inch, .999 fine silver coins.

Established in 1940, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is located at the border between Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Cumberland Gap is remembered as a gateway to the West, leading into the wilderness of Kentucky.

Cumberland Gap Coin Design

Designed by Barbara Fox with engraving by Joseph Menna, the reverse features a frontiersman gazing across the mountains to the West. Inscriptions around the image include CUMBERLAND GAP, FIRST DOORWAY TO THE WEST, KENTUCKY, 2016 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

All coins of the America the Beautiful series feature the common obverse portrait of George Washington as designed by John Flanagan. The effigy has appeared on U.S. quarters in some form or another since 1932, including the latest Cumberland Gap quarter issued in April under the program of America the Beautiful Quarters. Inscriptions around the portrait include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.

An edge inscription .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE identifies the composition and weight of each coin.

Unlike collector uncirculated coins that the U.S. Mint sells directly to the public, the bullion coins are sold through a network of authorized purchasers for a small premium above their associated melt values.

Maximum combined mintage for the uncirculated and bullion Cumberland Gap silver coins is 150,000. Released on April 18, the U.S. Mint has sold 64,000 of the bullion version as of this writing.
