2016 Proof Silver Eagles at 322,317 in 3 Days

On Friday, September 16, the U.S. Mint released the 2016-W Proof American Silver Eagle, and it debuted at number one in sales with orders totaling 322,317 coins in three days.

The hottest item is unique compared to previous strikes in the series that started in 1986 because the 2016 version is celebrating its 30th Anniversary with special engraving on the coin’s edge.
This year’s coin costs more than last year’s did, $53.95 vs $48.95, but that didn’t hurt sales. This year’s inaugural sales outpaced four years of prior coins’ launches. Last year’s coin opened with 262,377 over three days. Below is a table of other comparisons.

In related news, the U.S. Mint sold 255,000 bullion American Silver Eagles this week to its network of Authorized Purchasers. September sales climbed to 1,305,000 and year-to-date sales clocked in at 30,205,500.
