Canadian 2012 Maple Leaf Forever Silver Coins Released

Extending a program that debuted last year, the Royal Canadian Mint has released two new silver coins as part of the Maple Leaf Forever Coin series. Like the previous strikes, the 2012 Maple Leaf Forever Silver Coins are available in two different sizes — a one kilo $250 coin and a 1/2 ounce $10 coin.

Each of them is minted from 99.99% pure silver and has the unique "trilogy of maple leaves" reverse design by Luc Normandin. Mintages are limited. 82% of the kilo coins have already sold at a price of $2,249.95 each. The price for the 1/2 ounce coin is $34.95.
Designs and Specifications for Maple Leaf Forever Silver Coins
Both silver coins feature the same obverse and reverse designs. The "trilogy of maple leaves" reverse image is inspired by the maple leaf design that has been placed on the penny since 1937. It depicts a large maple leaf at the center, flanked by two smaller maple leaves.

The obverse of each showcases Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include "CANADA," "2012," "ELIZABETH II," "DG REGINA," "FINE SILVER," "ARGENT PUR" and "9999." Other inscriptions describe the coin’s size and amount with "1 kg" and "$250" on the kilogram piece and "10 DOLLARS" on the 1/2 ounce piece.

As shown in the chart above, the kilo coin has an extremely limited mintage of 1,200. The 1/2 ounce size has a larger mintage of 100,000.
The larger coin is encapsulated and shipped in a Canadian maple wood box lined with black flock and then placed along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in an illustrated box. The smaller one is also encapsulated but comes in a black cardboard pocket along with a numbered certificate which is packaged together in a black envelope with a green colored maple leaf design.
