Uncirculated Silver Eagles led U.S. Mint numismatic silver product sales

The latest U.S. Mint sales data shows mixed demand for numismatic silver products. Activity focused mostly on Silver Eagles and 2011 Silver Proof Sets. Modest improvements were also seen for three of the four silver commemoratives which the Mint will no longer offer after Friday.

With an improvement over the prior week, this year’s uncirculated Silver Eagles lead sales with 9,854 orders. Previously they jumped by 8,552. Following close behind was the 2011 Silver Proof Set. Collectors and gift buyers bought another 8,834 of the them after taking in 9,608 previously.

For commemoratives, both proof and uncirculated U.S. Army silver dollars rose with a combined total of 1,694 versus their previous weekly sales of 1,328. The proof Medal of Honor $1 gained 1,408 for an extremely slight improvement over the prior 1,402. These coins as well as the clad and gold versions will be taken off sale by the Mint on Friday at 5:00 PM ET.

Olympic 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins climbed comparatively slow during their first full week of availability. Arriving on the scene November 29, they gained 853 in the latest report, which took the total up to 9,515. With a struggle to cross the 10,000 marker, it seems apparent that most collectors who wanted one have already made their purchase and future weekly additions to the U.S. Mint sales tables are likely to remain sub-1000. The Olympic design was the eighth in the series. The Mint has yet to post the 2012 launch dates for the following two 2011 issues. Those coins will honor Vicksburg National Military Park and Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

Demand has shot higher for U.S. Mint bullion products. December sales of the bullion Silver Eagles on Wednesday jumped past the November sales total of 1,384,000. The new total hit 1,406,000 and that moved the year-to-date amount to 39,265,500. The latest surge is related to the recent plummeting prices of silver.
