The coin and currency set was released today, August 7, 2012 by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and United States Mint for $72.95. The limited edition set commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and the 220th year of service for the U.S. Mint.

As revealed last month, included within the Making American History Coin and Currency Set is a Series 2009 $5 note that has a starting serial number of ‘150.’ The note features a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, is signed by Treasurer of the U.S. Rosie Rios and has a Federal Reserve Bank designation of San Francisco.

Also within the set is a San Francisco minted 2012-S American Silver Eagle proof coin — the same coin that was sold by the U.S. Mint within a two-coin set back on June 7, 2012. It is this addition that has upset many collectors, as they were not expecting the proof to be offered in more than one product.

Instead of a mintage of around 251,000, the 2012-S Proof Silver Eagles numbers could swell by tens of thousands. If there is any consolation in all of this, the U.S. Mint has indicated that the other coin in the earlier released two-coin set, the 2012-S American Silver Eagle reverse proof coin, will not be offered elsewhere.

Where to Purchase

Anyone may purchase the Making American History Coin and Currency Set directly from the U.S. Mint website at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog, or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).

There are no household ordering limits, and up to 100,000 may be sold — although the Mint has stated its initial production is 50,000.

Upcoming Set also Contains Silver Eagle

There will be one other upcoming U.S. Mint product containing an American Silver Eagle. That is the 2012 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set which is scheduled with a release date of September 6, 2012. It will contain a 2012-W American Silver Eagle uncirculated coin from West Point, the four 2012 Presidential $1 coins and the 2012 Native American $1 coin. Its price is yet to be published.
