2012 American Silver Eagle Bullion Coin

Bullion American Silver Eagles stole the spotlight from the U.S. Mint’s numismatic silver products, per the latest sales figures. Demand for the bullion Silver Eagles jumped while it lessened for the collectibles.

Sales of the bullion coin surged 797,000 since last Wednesday to 1,862,000 for the month. In the previous report, the Silver Eagles gained 370,000. With the latest forward blast, the monthly total moved from the fifth best-ever March to the fourth. Achieving that third best spot, however, will be a challenge since it would take another 905,001 to beat the March 2011 total of 2,767,000.

In the top numismatic spot was the proof Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar with sales of 15,597. No other product came close. The proof Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar took second place as it rose by 6,563, followed by the Uncirculated Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar which added 5,363.

Although those increases may seem alright for the Mint, they were dwarfed compared to sales in the prior round when the Star-Spangled Banner coins debuted and more than 69,000 silver dollars were purchased by collectors.

The only numismatic silver product to outperform was the 2011-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle. It grew from 3,192 previously to 3,776 in the current round.
