Silver coin collectors have been busy shopping, according to the latest US Mint sales stats. Orders are maxed out for the Grand Canyon 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, both proof and bullion Silver Eagles leaped, and 9/11 Silver Medals continued their strong advance.

Just 738 Grand Canyon silver uncirculated coins were available in the previous round, but the US Mint sold another 892. Their most recent sales total came to 27,154, or 154 more than the maximum 27,000. The final number will most likely work its way back down, however, following canceled and problem orders.

Having launched on June 29, the Grand Canyon silver coin is the fourth issue in the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin series. It has, so far, taken the longest to reach its mintage limit at approximately seven and a half weeks. The Hot Springs, Yellowstone, and Yosemite issues took about 14 days, 16 days, and six weeks, respectively, to hit 27,000 orders. Part of Yosemite’s delay, albeit, was the early and unintentional posting of a waiting list. Although Grand Canyon orders are maxed according to the Mint’s sales stats, they are, surprisingly, still for sale on the Mint’s online ordering page.

Like a brilliant star in the sky, the numismatic item that shined the brightest was the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle. Collectors scooped up another 36,981 after taking 35,271 previously. With that addition, they passed the 700K marker to hit 716,328. That puts their mintage above the 2008 Proof Silver Eagles which ended at 700,979. The 2010 Proof Silver Eagles reached 860,000. The coins were not issued in 2009.

As the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, orders for the commemorative 9/11 Silver Medals continued to grow. In this round their combined pick-up was 17,508 following the 17,026 surge in the prior week. Sales for the strikes produced at the mint facility in West Point persistently outpaced those from Philadelphia, 10,377 to 7,131. Since their launch on June 20, the US Mint has sold 151,898 of the medals. It should be noted their price increased to $66.95 last Thursday, August 18.

One of the two silver sets suspended on Friday nearly doubled its sales as compared to the previous weekly gain. Transactions for the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set went from 762 up to 1,374. US Mint sales for the 2010 Silver Proof Set, also suspended last Friday, grew by just 373 versus 395. As a side note, both silver sets returned to availability Thursday afternoon.

The bullion 2011 Silver Eagle just topped 28 million with the latest batch of purchases from Mint’s authorized buyers. In all, 915,000 Silver Eagles have been ordered in the last nine days. That moved their year-to-date sales to 28,171,000. August’s tally comes to 2,899,500, and there is still nearly a week left of sales. 68,500 more are needed to match July’s total of 2,968,000.
