US Mint silver coin salesOverall, United States Mint silver product sales backed off, but much of it had to do with the popular 2010 Silver Proof Set that was released last month. Sales always start out fast and then slow down for new issues. Two silver products were able to outperform previous gains, according to the latest round of US Mint sales figures.

Bullion American Silver Eagles advanced 245,000 compared to 205,000 during the previous week. The increase was just 9,500 shy of reaching 24 million in year-to-date sales. Instead, the total hit 23,990,500. As for the month, September demand remains weaker. 15 days have passed, and authorized buyers have only picked up 390,000. As a comparison, 842,500 had already been purchased in the first eleven days of August — a month that was slow itself, finishing with the second lowest monthly total in 2010.

The other Mint product that performed better was the proof American Veterans Disabled for Life silver dollar. It climbed 799 versus 761 previously. The uncirculated dollar, on the other hand, only rose by 175, compared to 314. A combined total of 226,306 have sold, leaving 123,694 of the maximum 350,000 mintage still available.

The two most popular numismatic products remained the 2010 Silver Proof Set and the America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set. Collectors and gift-givers scooped up 8,949 of the silver sets during its second full week on sale. The set launched on August 26. Its new total was just shy of 300K, at 297,492.

The quarters set added 1,957 in this round, which was considerably lower than the prior 6,909 weekly gain. The launch of the Grand Canyon quarter into circulation on September 20 should help drive collectors attention to the silver sets.
