US Mint Sales: Silver Eagles Sail, Boy Scouts Coins Hit 350,000 Max

Sales for U.S. Mint silver products were mixed last week, according to the most recent United States Mint statistics. Two out of five numismatic products outperformed their prior increases, and Silver Eagle bullion coins were hot as authorized buyers stocked up their inventory.

With less than one week left in the month, American Silver Eagles have been flying out of Mint’s doors, but beating May’s 3.6 million ounce record looks unlikely. Right now the June tally is at 2,533,500. That is 1,103,000 short of May’s number — the highest monthly level since 1986, and so far June’s weekly sales have not seen seven digit numbers. It does looks like June’s total will hit 3 million.

As for numismatic sales, 2010 Boy Scouts of America Silver Dollar coins topped out at their 350,000 maximum mintage, 12 weeks after their launch (read Boy Scouts Proof Silver Dollar Coins Sold Out). In last week’s report they were 1,200 shy but easily caught up to the sell out figure by Friday the 18th. The uncirculated Boy Scout coin total remained the same at 105,000, leaving the proof silver coin at 245,000. The U.S. Mint is still taking names on a waiting list for the proofs, however, in case any adjustments for returns or cancellations are necessary.

The highest weekly gain for a single collector’s coin went to the proof version of the 2010 Disabled American Veterans Silver Dollar. 1,979 were sold compared to the previous 1,619. But while those were hot, the uncirculated coins cooled. Just 84 were sold compared to the previous 629. The new combined total hit 209,565 of the 350,000 maximum, and it was their 16th week on sale.

The other numismatic product to improve was the 2009 DC and Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set. 1,189 sold compared to the previous 687. After nearly 65 weeks on sale, launched on March 23, 2009, the Mint has sold 283,634 sets. That is lower than the 2008-dated quarters silver proof set. It sold over 400,000 in less time. The last day to purchase the 2009 set is still unknown.

The brilliant gem among the collectibles remained the recently released 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™. While their sales thrust continued to weaken, another 9,711 were sold in seven days. The new total was 114,887.
