US Mint Sales: Silver Eagles Top 19M, Collector Coins Slow

US Mint silver coin salesThe latest US Mint sales figures have been released, and there were no standouts among the silver numismatic products, aside from the fact that the DAV commemorative coins did not do as well as they did in the prior week. None of the collector products outperformed their previous weekly gains. Bullion American Silver Eagle coins, on the other hand, are blazing forth.

The first seven days of the month have been bountiful for the bullion silver coins. 875,500 have been sold to authorized buyers. It may be too early to predict but if the pace continues, July will be another 3 million sales month for 2010. The total for the year is now above 19 million, which continues to add uncertainty that 2010 proof eagles will get minted this year at all. Last year’s numbers set a new record annual pace (at 28,766,500), resulting in the 2009 American Silver Eagle proof and uncirculated coin cancellations, to collector’s great disappointment. 2010 sales are much better through the first six months of the year as compared to the same period in 2009, or of any year in the history of the series which dates back to 1986.

The best numismatic performer was the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets™. They added another 4,806 to their total, which is now at 126,912, or 44.5 percent of the current total for the 2009 DC and Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set. The 2009 set only tacked on 593 to bring its total to 284,884.

2010 Disabled American Veterans Silver Dollars slowed their stride. The spike of 4,258 proofs and 985 uncirculated in the prior week slid to just 910 and 281 respectively. The slowdown is not surprising however. Between May and early June, the weekly high jumps were usually followed by low jumps. So far, the commemoratives are one coin shy of 216,000 or 61.7 percent of their maximum mintage of 350,000.

Even though the 2010 Boy Scouts of America Silver Dollar coins hit their maximum mintage of 350,000 a few weeks ago, the Mint is still allowing a waiting list for the proof version but has not made any adjustments to their sales total.

The next 2010 silver numismatic product from the Mint will debut on August 26th, more than a month and a half away. It will be the 2010 Mint Silver Proof Set. As mentioned, the possibility of a 2010 Uncirculated or Proof American Silver Eagle is yet to be determined, but it would seem that if they are minted, they would get released later in the year. For bullions, the first America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver Bullion Coins are estimated to launch later this summer.
