US Mint Silver Coin Sales: Few Boy Scouts Commemoratives Left

US Mint silver coin salesDemand for 2009-dated silver proof sets improved while 2010 individual silver coins faded, according to the latest weekly United States Mint sales report.

Sales for 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollars slowed once again after experiencing a slight spike in the prior figures. 1,791 proof and uncirculated were added, compared to the previous 2,696. The commemoratives’ total made it to 198,260. The maximum allotment is 350,000.

Only a few 2010 Boy Scouts of America Silver Dollars remain available from the US Mint, and a total sell out could happen any day — although it looks like it may take several at least given the latest pace numbers. Just 11,391 were left as of Sunday. The uncirculated dollars sold out over a week ago, and their sales were updated from 107,292 to 108,671 in this report. Instead of driving up demand, pursuit of proof versions mellowed out at 6,628, after nearly 12,000 were scooped up last week. A total of 229,938 proofs have been sold. The Boy Scouts silver coins are at 96.7% of their maximum 350,000 authorized.

Both of the silver proof sets outperformed last week’s stats. The 18-coin 2009 US Mint Silver Proof Set jumped by 1,531, compared to last week’s 1,305. It was their best surge since March. As predicted, the sets have now topped the 680,000 marker.

The 2009 DC and Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set picked up steam too. It climbed 539 over 481. With the kickoff of the new quarter series, the America the Beautiful Quarters, and the 2010 silver proof set for quarters slated to release on May 27th, the Mint will likely stop selling the2009 DC and Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set by then. 278,715 have sold since released on March 23, 2009.

As for bullion coins, the April figures are in and 2,507,500 American Silver Eagles were sold. It wasn’t a record-breaking month, but 337,500 were picked up in the last four days making it the second best April ever. May could be a strong month, since sales were already at 405,000 as of May 5. Silver prices plunged this week, which may make for "buying on the dip" opportunities.
