US Mint Silver Coins, Eagles Slow in Thanksgiving Sales Week

US Mint silver coin sales statsBlack Friday excitement did not translate into higher sales for silver coins, according to the latest figures from the US Mint weekly sales report. Demand for silver coins was down for all but one product.

Ironically, the one to perform better was actually released last year. The Mint’s 2008 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set had weekly sales of 1,300 compared to the prior 1,163. The set is the only way to purchase an uncirculated American Silver Eagle from the Mint, albeit a 2008-dated version, as the numismatic 2009 Silver Eagles were canceled.

Investors and collectors of the bullion 2009 American Silver Eagles will note that their numbers are unchanged from those reported on Nov. 24. The Mint suspended Gold Eagles last week as their inventory was depleted. Indications are that the Silver Eagles were suspended as well.

Last week’s report showed that the US Mint’s authorized dealers purchased 986,000 Silver Eagles during the prior six days, bringing the November tally up to 2,586,500. That remained unchanged. The year-to-date total is still 25,993,000 — which, as a reminder, is the best ever for the series that started in 1986.

The following two tables have the latest US Mint stats for collector silver coins and sets and bullion silver eagles.
