Collectors must now look to the secondary market to purchase the 2011-P Gettysburg National Military Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. The United States Mint is no longer offering the silver coins, having stated they are sold out.
That call came on Wednesday, December 5, 2012. The last sales total was well below the coin’s intended mintage of 35,000. That was the maximum amount listed by the U.S. Mint when Gettysburg National Military Park silver coins were released on September 22, 2011. Sales for the five ounce piece reached 24,572 as of December 3, 2012, or a bit more than 10,000 away from the intended mintage had collector demand called for it.
Marking the sixth in the order launched and the first of the 2011 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins, Gettysburg silver coins are composed from five ounces of 99.9% pure silver. They have a diameter of 3.0 inches and a thickness of 0.16 inches. The silver weight of each makes them susceptible to price changes when the precious metals market fluctuates significantly. That happened three times. The Gettysburg National Military Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin was released with a price tag of $279.75. It later dropped to $229.95 and then again to its lowest price at $204.95. Its price was then raised back to $229.95, which is where it eventually sold out at.
Currently the United States Mint is selling the remaining four five ounce silver coins with 2011 dates. They will not be available for long, however. The U.S. Mint notes in its Last Chance Sales page that sales will end for these silver coins after 12 noon ET on December 31, 2012. The U.S. Mint is also selling this year’s five ATB silver coins.
Here is a grid with the latest sales stats for the five ounce coins still available from the Mint.

The U.S. Mint continues to offer the investment-grade bullion versions of the above silver coins. These appear exactly like the collector uncirculated coins, with the exception of their differing finish and the lack of the "P" mint mark. The bullion coins are also not sold directly to the public by the Mint, but instead through a network bullion and coin distributors. Prices for the bullion coins are much cheaper as they typically sell for just a few dollars above the current price of silver they contain.
