House Approves US Marshals Service Coins in Gold, Silver and Clad

On Thursday, December 15, 2011, legislation passed in the US House of Representatives that would authorize the United States Mint to strike up to 1.35 million gold, silver and clad commemorative coins in calendar year 2015 to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the founding of the United States Marshals Service.

Introduced on March 2, 2011 by Rep. Steve Womack [R-AR3], the House voted for the United States Marshals Service 225th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act in an overwhelming 412 to 1 majority (9 members did not vote).

According to the bill, numbered H.R. 886, three denominations of coins would be minted with limits of 100,000 for the $5 gold coins, 500,000 for the silver dollars and 750,000 for the clad half-dollars. Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar Commemorative Coin Designs

The United States Mint on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, unveiled the commemorative coin designs for the 2012 Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar. These upcoming silver dollars will celebrate the bicentennial of the writing of the national anthem of the United States and will be issued along with commemorative $5 gold coins.

Congress authorized their releases under the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Act (Public Law 111-232). According to the terms of the act, the new commemorative coin is to feature designs "emblematic of the War of 1812 and particularly the Battle for Baltimore that formed the basis for the Star-Spangled Banner." Uncirculated Silver Eagles led U.S. Mint numismatic silver product sales

The latest U.S. Mint sales data shows mixed demand for numismatic silver products. Activity focused mostly on Silver Eagles and 2011 Silver Proof Sets. Modest improvements were also seen for three of the four silver commemoratives which the Mint will no longer offer after Friday.

With an improvement over the prior week, this year’s uncirculated Silver Eagles lead sales with 9,854 orders. Previously they jumped by 8,552. Following close behind was the 2011 Silver Proof Set. Collectors and gift buyers bought another 8,834 of the them after taking in 9,608 previously. Read More…

This is the last week for several 2011 commemorative coins, including four silver dollars. The United States Mint plans to take them off sale on Friday, December 16, 2011 at 5 PM Eastern Time.

Mark Twain and March of Dimes Commemorative Silver Dollars Sought

Once again, two new pieces of legislation have been introduced in the Senate that would authorize the U.S. Mint to strike commemorative silver dollars to honor Mark Twain and also the March of Dimes.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), proposed a new version of the Mark Twain Commemorative Coin Act, numbered S.1929, to the Senate last week (November 30, 2011). It is very similar to bills there were introduced in Congress back in 2008 and 2009, which had died due to inaction. Read More…
