2009 Montreal Canadiens® Centennial CoinMarking 100 years since the founding of a legendary hockey team, the Royal Canadian Mint's issue of the commemorative Montreal Canadiens Centennial Silver Dollar sold out within a month's time.

The proof coin experienced exceptional demand since its March 10th launch. With just 15,000 authorized, an eventual sellout was evident.

The Montreal Canadiens was founded December 4, 1909 by owner John Ambrose O'Brien. At its' helm he placed player and coach Jack Laviolette. Laviolette put Newsy Lalonde at the center of the 15 players he would recruit. Already a hockey star in his own right, Lalonde's abilities were not enough to make the Canadiens a real challenge to the other professional teams that year. The Canadiens would wind up winning only 2 of the 12 games they played.

That first season was not an accurate predictor of the future of the Canadiens franchise. They would end being arguably the most successful franchise in hockey history winning an amazing NHL record of 24 Stanly Cup Championships. Add to this the 54 members they have added to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and a slew of other accomplishments, the Canadiens proved their abilities year after year.

Containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper with enhanced touches of selective gold plating, this proof quality coin weighs 25.18 grams (0.809555 troy ounce). The diameter of 36.07mm is surrounded with a reeded edge.

The obverse has a profile of Queen Elizabeth II with her name spelled out, and the inscription "D G Regina," short for Dei Gratia Regina, which is latin for By the Grace of God, Queen. The reverse displays the Montreal Canadiens® logo, as well as "CANADA," "1909," "2009" and "DOLLAR."

The Mint issue price for the coin presented in a clamshell case was $69.95 CAD or $74.75 CAD with an acrylic stand. Collectors will now have to look toward the secondary market for the coins. Current prices on eBay already indicate substantial premiums.

Still available directly from the Mint are coin rolls of the Montreal Canadiens Centennial circulation dollars. A roll of 25 coins is priced at $44.95 CAD.
