Featured on the reverse of the one-ounce, 99.9% pure silver coin is a design depicting the TARDIS, a time-travelling space ship. Fans of the show will readily recognize the TARDIS. It has an outward appearance of a British police box, a common site when the series debuted in 1963, with an inside that is much larger. Using it, Doctor Who and his companions battle injustices throughout time and space. The popular TV program is the world’s longest running science fiction television series, according to the Guinness World Records. It first aired on British TV in November 1963.

Surrounding the TARDIS on the silver coin and meant to represent multi-dimensional travel is a uniquely colored background. Boarding it are large inscriptions reading DOCTOR WHO 50TH ANNIVERSARY 1963 – 2013. In smaller letters to either side are inscriptions 1oz 999 FINE SILVER and Doctor Who logo © 2012 & ™ BBC. Licensed by BBCWW Ltd.

An officially license product, the mintage limit of the silver coin is capped at 10,000. The Perth Mint of Australia is currently noting strong demand and, as a result, delays in shipping. The product page for the silver coin currently states:

"Overwhelming demand for this coin has resulted in a delay in fulfilling orders. Orders will be fulfilled in order of receipt commencing 1 July and we anticipate to have all orders fulfilled by early August. Credit cards will be charged immediately prior to dispatch."

These silver coins are produced by The Perth Mint on behalf of New Zealand Mint and as legal tender of the South Pacific island nation of Niue. As such, obverses depict Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Surrounding her portrait are inscriptions of NIUE, TWO DOLLARS, ELIZABETH II and the year 2013.

Pricing for the 50th anniversary silver coin is AUS $104.54 or US $96.36, though prices can change based on the market value of silver.
