Shown on the reverse is a design emblematic of Great Sand Dunes National Park of Colorado. This coin marks the fourth of five 2014-dated strikes to be issued as part of the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins™ Program.

Each is composed of 5.0 ounces of 99.9% pure silver and features a diameter of 3 inches. Mintage for the coin has been limited to 30,000.

Great Sand Dunes National Park Silver Coin Design

Coins of the series feature the same basic obverse and reverse designs as found on the related America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.

This includes an obverse portrait of George Washington, as originally designed by John Flanagan. The effigy was initially created by Flanagan for use on the 1932 circulating quarter-dollar. It has appeared on quarters ever since, with some minor variations. Inscribed around the portrait are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR. A ‘P’ mint mark found on the obverse indicates the coin was struck at the U.S. Mint facility in Philadelphia.

The reverse of the Great Sand Dunes Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin has a father and son playing in the sand next to a creek bed with the park’s distinctive mountains and sand dunes seen behind, which is the same as the Great Sand Dunes National Park Quarter. Inscriptions include GREAT SAND DUNES,COLORADO, 2014, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse was designed and executed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart.

Purity and fineness are indicated on each coin with an edge inscription. The inscription reads .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE.

Orders, Pricing and Subscription Discount

When issued, the 2014-P Great Sand Dunes Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin may be ordered directly from the U.S. Mint for $154.95, plus the U.S. Mint’s standard shipping and handling charge of $4.95 per order. This price is subject to change, but has been used for the last six program releases.

For reference, when the program debuted with 2010-dated coins, they were initially sold for $279.95. Falling silver prices and more aggressive Mint pricing policies have led to a significant reduction in prices for the program.

In addition, those opting into the U.S. Mint’s subscription program for the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins will have received a 10% discount on the coin, bringing the price down to $139.45. Enrollees of the program are shipped coins of the series automatically as they are issued.

To order a Great Sand Dunes Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, visit the Mint’s website, right here. You may also call 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Orders are accepted beginning at Noon (Eastern) on September 15, 2014.

No household or ordering limits are in place. Each coin is encapsulated and presented inside a protective outer box. A United States Mint Certificate of Authenticity is also included.

Bullion Version

As mentioned, the United States Mint also issues bullion versions. These coins are nearly identical to their uncirculated counterparts. The easiest way to tell the two series apart is to look for a mint mark. Uncirculated silver coins have the ‘P’ mint mark on their obverse. Bullion silver coins are also struck in Philadelphia, but lack a mint mark.

Unlike the uncirculated coins, which are initially sold directly to the public by the U.S. Mint, bullion coins are only sold through the Mint’s network of authorized purchasers. They buy them in bulk from the Mint and resell them to the public for a small premium above the current melt price of the five ounces of silver each coin has.

Sales of the Great Sand Dunes Silver Bullion Coin began late last month. They are at 10,000 as of Friday.
