This latest coin marks the seventh release in the Perth’s popular Australian Map Shaped Coin Series. Like other program coins, it is composed from one-ounce of 99.9% pure silver and has a maximum mintage of 6,000.

"Found throughout mainland Australia, Tasmania and southern New Guinea, the Wedge-tailed Eagle has a wingspan of up to 2.7 metres, and displays a long, wedge-shaped tail and feathered legs," offers the Perth Mint as a description of the featured bird.

The Australian Map Shaped Coin Series debuted in 2012 and has included the following issues:

  • 2012 Australian Map Shaped Kookaburra Coin
  • 2012 Australian Map Shaped Emu Coin
  • 2013 Australian Map Shaped Kangaroo Coin
  • 2013 Australian Map Shaped Platypus Coin
  • 2014 Australian Map Shaped Koala Coin
  • 2014 Australian Map Shaped Saltwater Crocodile Coin

Owing to their unique shape, limited mintages and varying subject matter, the series has proven popular with collectors. The first four program coins attained sell-out status and last two are near the mark, with the Mint noting that their availability is "extremely limited."

Silver Coin Design, Specifications and Order Details

Each new silver coin is struck in the shape of the Australian continent. Found on the reverse is a depiction of the bird of prey in mid-flight above a river, with mountains in the background. WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE, 2015 and 1 oz 999 SILVER are inscribed around the scene along with the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

These silver coins are struck as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse along with the inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 2015 and 1 DOLLAR.

Specifications for the coin are identical to other program issues and are as follows:
