With a limited 5,000 mintage, the Perth Mint has issued the 2015 Australian Koala 5 oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin.
Appearing on the reverse of each five ounce, 99.9% pure silver coin is the image of a koala as it sits in the fork of a eucalyptus tree. This is the standard image found on all 2015-dated Australian Koala coins from the Perth Mint. However, this specific design displays an enhanced level of detail owing to the coin’s high relief.
Koala High Relief Coin Design and Specifications
Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong’s design of a single adult koala perched on the branch of a eucalyptus tree is struck on a concave surface to allow for increased detail. Inscribed above the design is AUSTRALIAN KOALA with 2015 5 oz 999 SILVER below it. To the right of the marsupial is the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
Also struck on a concave surface, the high relief obverse offers Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions surrounding the portrait include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and the silver coin’s legal tender face value of 8 DOLLARS.
Other specifications include a silver content of 5 troy ounces, a minimum gross weight of 155.673 grams, a maximum diameter of 50.60 mm and a much larger than typical coin thickness of 12.50 mm.
