Celebrating a national refuge and breeding ground for waterfowl and other wildlife in Delaware, the United States Mint on Thursday, October 8, will release a five ounce silver coin showcasing a reverse design emblematic of Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.
This release for collectors is issued under the U.S. Mint’s series of America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins and appears as the fourth 2015-dated release. Each three-inch coin features a composition of five ounces of 99.9% pure silver and is available at www.usmint.gov on the 8th beginning at Noon (Eastern Time).
Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is located along the eastern coast of Delaware Bay in Kent County, Delaware. The refuge was established on March 16, 1937 with land purchased using federal duck stamp funds. Today, the refuge consists of 15,978 acres and includes a pre-revolutionary war farmhouse known as the Allee House.
Bombay Hook Silver Coin Design
A great blue heron is in the foreground on the reverse (tails side) of the collectible coin with a great egret in the background. The design, emblematic of the refuge, was created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Joel Iskowitz and was sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.
This same image appears on every Bombay Hook coin issued by the United States Mint in all related America the Beautiful coin programs such as the Bombay Hook quarter and the five-ounce Bombay Hook silver bullion coin that sold out the day after it was released. Reverse inscriptions around the design include BOMBAY HOOK, DELAWARE, 2015, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
The obverse (heads side) portrays a likeness of the first President of the United States, George Washington, as designed by John Flanagan. Obverse inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR.
To identify the composition of each coin, an edge inscription reads .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE.
