2016-P Harpers Ferry 5 Ounce Silver Coins for Collectors

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park of West Virginia is celebrated on a five-ounce silver coin launching on Thursday, July 14, 2016.

2016-P Harpers Ferry Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin

The 2016-P Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin goes on sale at noon ET on the 14th for $149.95.

This product for collectors is the thirty-third issue from the U.S. Mint’s series of America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins, the program which features designs of national parks on 3-inch, .999 fine silver coins.

Established in 1944 as a national monument and then in 1963 as national park, Harpers National Historical Park is located at the junction of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers in and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. More than 70% of the park’s 3,645 acres is forest, which includes more than 20 miles of trails for hikers.

Harpers Ferry Coin Design

Designed by Thomas Hipschen with engraving by Phebe Hemphill, the reverse features John Brown’s Fort, the site of John Brown’s last stand during his raid on the Harpers Ferry Armory. Inscriptions around the image read: HARPERS FERRY, WEST VIRGINIA, JOHN BROWN’S FORT, 2016 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

All America the Beautiful coins share an obverse portrait of George Washington as designed by John Flanagan. Washington has appeared on U.S. quarters since 1932, including the newest Cumberland Gap quarter issued in June under the U.S. Mint’s program of America the Beautiful Quarters. Inscriptions around the effigy read: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.

Quarters have reeded edges. Edges of these silver coins are flat and include lettering of .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE to identify their composition and weight.

Ordering

When released on the 14th at noon ET for $149.95, the 2016-P Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin will be available from this U.S. Mint product page or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).

The maximum potential mintage for the uncirculated coin has been set as 30,000.

Bullion Version

A similar Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin has been available since June. It features identical designs as the just discussed uncirculated coin for collectors, minus the mintmark — although the Philadelphia Mint produces both.

Unlike uncirculated coins that the U.S. Mint sells directly to the public, the Mint’s bullion coins are sold through a network of authorized purchasers for a small premium above their associated melt values.

The maximum combined mintage for both editions is 150,000. The U.S. Mint at this writing has sold 34,200 of the bullion coin.
