Hot Springs, Gettysburg and Glacier Silver Coins

A sell out of the Hot Springs 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin produced for coin collectors could be called within days, based on the latest sales figures.

The United States Mint has indicated that approximately 25,000, or 92.5%, of the available 27,000 have been sold as of late afternoon Monday, May 2.

The 5 ounce silver uncirculated coin went on sale Thursday, April 28, at 12:00 noon Eastern Time for $279.95. A brisk ordering pace brought sales to more than 19,000 by Thursday evening.

The coin, as a collector product, is sold directly by the United States Mint (http://www.usmint.gov/) to anyone interested in buying. There is a one coin limit per household in effect until Friday. It would appear, however, that there is a good chance it could sell out before then.

Also nearing a sell out are the Gettysburg National Military Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin and the Glacier National Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin which are produced with investors in mind.

Both 5 ounce coins went on sale exactly one week ago on Monday, April 25. The United States Mint indicates 15,200 of them, or 7,600 per coin, are available as of Monday, May 2. A total of 253,000, or 126,500 per coin, were minted.

As bullion products, these silver coins are not sold directly to the public by the Mint. Instead, they have been purchased in allocated amounts by nine Authorized Purchasers who buy the silver coins in bulk and then resell them for a small premium above the current cost of silver.

The 5 ounce bullion and collector coins share the same designs as those on corresponding America the Beautiful Quarters®. All coins in the series celebrate a national park or national site by featuring a unique reverse design emblematic of a site honored.

Aside from their finishes and how they are sold, the main difference between the 5 ounce bullion and 5 ounce collector silver coins are the presence or lack of a mint mark. Both series are produced in Philadelphia. However, the Gettysburg and Glacier bullion issues have no mintmark. The Hot Springs issue and the other collector five ounce silver coin feature a "P" mintmark.

Check out this site’s silver coins page for more information on both series and other coins.

I can’t find the 2011 bullion Glacier and Gettysburg order pages on the mint site – does anyone know if they are sold out? (Or the url?)

Never mind – I now realize the bullion coins are available through resellers…
