Silver Prices End Below $18, Bullion Coin Demand Plummets

Weekly Silver UpdateU.S. silver prices fell 33.6 cents on Friday, marking four straight days of losses an pulling the metal a penny below $18 an ounce. Silver has fallen for two straight weeks.

On Friday, September silver finished at $17.991 an ounce on the Comex in New York, registering a 0.7% weekly loss and hitting its lowest closing point of the week. The metal’s highs were on Tuesday, with an intraday ceiling of $18.62 an ounce and a closing level of $18.595 an ounce. Read More…

9/11 Commemorative Silver Medals for 10th Anniversary

The 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be commemorated next year with silver medals, which be available for purchase in years 2011 and 2012.

The 9/11 commemorative silver medals will feature a design "emblematic of the courage, sacrifice, and strength of those individuals who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the bravery of those who risked their lives to save others that day, and the endurance, resilience, and hope of those who survived."

The design, as described in the National September 11 Memorial & Museum Commemorative Medal Act, will also feature the year inscriptions ‘2001-2011’, and the words ‘Always Remember’. Read More…

US Mint Sales: Bullion Eagles Rise 100K, Silver Sets Slow

US Mint silver coin salesIt was an unusually slow week for U.S. silver coin products, even for silver bullion. Only one numismatic item outperformed its prior week’s gains, but just barely. The biggest sales gap, however, was in American Silver Eagles.

Since last Tuesday, August 10, and as of this writing, only 100,000 bullion 2010 American Silver Eagles were sold, compared to 567,000 in a five day period in the previous report. At least the year-to-date total broke the 22 million milestone, by hitting 22,092,000. Collectors hoping for 2010 proof versions are probably relieved to see the bullion’s change of pace. Read More…

2010 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins Set for Fall

The development work for the 2010 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins is over, the United States Mint confirmed late last week. Full production is expected to begin this Fall.

The new 12 year coin series goes hand-in-hand with the America the Beautiful Quarters™ and will, in fact, bear the same designs as the circulating quarters which feature national park and national site themes.

While three of this year’s five quarters have already entered circulation, the companion 5 ounce, .999 fine silver coins were delayed with production problems. After numerous tests, retrials and using a newly purchased coin press, the kinks of producing and also placing edge letterings on the massively wide, but fairly thin coins has been solved. US Silver Prices and Bullion Coins Decline for Week

Weekly Silver UpdateU.S. silver prices fell 36.3 cents this week after rising 46.9 cents last week. Silver also broke away, to some degree, in tracking gold which was the only precious metal to post a weekly gain.

On Friday, Silver for September delivery rose 4.4 cents, or 0.2 percent, to finish at $18.109 an ounce on the Comex in New York. It was the third highest closing price of the week, with Monday’s $18.242 the best. Silver hit its lowest intraday point on Wednesday at $17.795 an ounce while its highest intraday level was attained on Monday at $18.575 an ounce. Read More…

US Mint Sales: Eagles Hot, Proof Silver Quarter Sets Pass 150K

US Mint silver coin salesExcluding bullion silver coins, it was a slower week for U.S. silver coin products. Each numismatic item took on an easier summertime pace than the previous week while the bullions blazed onward.

The most popular numismatic item was the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™. Sales were a touch slower, increasing 5,230 compared to 5,943. Their total hit 154,245.

Adding flames to the fire on an already hot year for bullion 2010 American Silver Eagles, July sales of the silver coins again attained record levels.

Coming in at 2,981,000 coins sold, the month goes down in the history books as the best ever July for the series that was introduced back in 1986. The old record was hit just last year when sales of the Silver Eagles came in slightly over 2.8 million — shattering the previous record set in 2008 of only 1.25 million. Read More…
