Unfortunately for many of them, as well as for the U.S. Mint, early ordering did not go well. Initial reports from some buyers indicate there were delays and ordering errors as they tried to complete their transactions.

Many collectors who attempted to place orders via the Mint’s web site started having issues almost immediately as the ordering window opened at noon (Eastern Time). Read More…

Tarek Saab StoryLost in the daily commentary about gold and silver prices is the actual cost of taking possession of these precious metals. Unless you trade in paper GLD or SLV, or you store your bullion in overseas vaults with companies like Goldmoney, the actual cost to purchase gold and silver can diverge from the COMEX spot price by as much as 36% (as I will show below).

We have analyzed the premiums for these two monetary metals over the past year and a half, and we hope to offer some perspective on "real" market prices. Read More…

Boy Scouts Silver Dollar Coins Launch Tuesday, Order Limit Surprise

March 16, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The United States Mint today officially announced the launch date and order limits for the 2010 Boy Scouts of America Centennial Silver Dollar. The commemorative BSA coins go on sale Tuesday, March 23, at noon Eastern Time.

The release date is not news, as the US Mint had the date tentatively scheduled back in January, 2010. What is news and surprising is the household order limit of 100 per option — both a proof and uncirculated version will be available.

The 350,000 mintage limit for both coins is already lower than last year’s silver commemoratives, and the 2010 Boy Scouts coins are highly anticipated with many believing they will sell out. The high order limit could potentially make it difficult for some to purchase, as they may be gone even earlier than many watchers were thinking. The Lincoln Silver Dollars from last year, which were extremely popular and sold out at a mintage of 500,000, had less pre-sale chatter than the upcoming silver dollar releases which celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.

The BSA coin designs were revealed in December. The coin’s obverse features a Cub Scout in the foreground with a Boy Scout and a female Venturer in the background saluting.  The Venturer represents how the Boy Scouts of America organization has evolved over the past century to serve all the youth of America, including girls. It was designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Charles L. Vickers.

A $10 surcharge will be added to the sale of each coin and will be forwarded to the National Boy Scouts of America Foundation. The Foundation will use the money as grants given to local councils to improve Scouting activities in hard-to-serve areas.

When released, the coins may be purchased through the U.S. mint website, www.usmint.gov, or via their toll-free number 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
