Silver Prices Decline 4.5% in April

Silver Update

U.S. silver prices declined on the final trading day in April, driving the month further into the red and cementing a second straight monthly loss.

On Monday and in closing April, silver prices for July delivery fell 39.5 cents, or 1.3% to $31.016 an ounce on the Comex in New York. The white metal touched an intraday low of $30.600 an ounce and reached a high of $31.445 an ounce. Read More…

2012-W Proof Silver Eagle Coins Lead Sales

The hottest numismatic silver coins last week, and for a second straight week, were 2012-W Proof Silver Eagles. According to the latest U.S. Mint sales figures, collectors ordered another 29,117. When combined with their debut sales from the prior round, the Proof Silver Eagle hit 328,656.

It was a close race for the other leading products, although their sales were not in the same league as the new Eagles. The 2012 ATB Quarters Silver Proof Set rose by 1,616 and the proof Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar increased by 1,327. Right behind were the 2011-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle coins. In addition to this 2012-W Silver Eagle, two other proof American Eagles from the San Francisco Mint are expected out this year.

With limited details yet available, the United States Mint has unofficially confirmed that an American Silver Eagle set will be issued in 2012. The confirmation comes in the form of a projected release date listed on the Mint’s store website for a 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Set. The set is currently scheduled with a release date of June 7, 2012.

The likelihood of a special set was speculated upon earlier this year based on surveys sent out to U.S. Mint customers. Additional details of a pending set have started to appear in trade publications. Read More…

House Approves Mark Twain Gold and Silver Commemorative Coins

Mark TwainGold and silver commemorative coins honoring the life and legacy of Mark Twain are one step closer to reality after the House of Representatives passed the Mark Twain Commemorative Coin Act on Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

The bill, H.R. 2453, was presented on July 7, 2011 by Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer of Missouri. It pre-dates the companion Senate version, S. 1929, which was introduced on November 30, 2011.

Both pieces of legislation call for maximum mintages of 100,000 $5 gold and 350,000 $1 silver commemorative coins for issuance during calendar year 2016.

Several attempts to celebrate Mark Twain through U.S. coins have been made since the 110th session of Congress. None have garnered enough support to pass both chambers. Read More…
