2012-W Proof Silver Eagle

The hottest numismatic silver coins last week, and for a second straight week, were 2012-W Proof Silver Eagles. According to the latest U.S. Mint sales figures, collectors ordered another 29,117. When combined with their debut sales from the prior round, the Proof Silver Eagle hit 328,656.

It was a close race for the other leading products, although their sales were not in the same league as the new Eagles. The 2012 ATB Quarters Silver Proof Set rose by 1,616 and the proof Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar increased by 1,327. Right behind were the 2011-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle coins. Their sales climbed another 1,248 in the latest round.

None of the top sellers, however, came close to the advances they made in the prior week when the proof Silver Eagle debuted. A slowdown is typical, especially when the next launch of a silver product is not offered for more than a month’s time. Per the U.S. Mint Product Schedule, the upcoming item will be the 2012 Silver Proof Set on June 4.

Only three silver products outperformed their previous week’s sales. They were the 9/11 Silver Medals from West Point which gained 173 versus 78, the 2011 ATB Quarters Silver Proof Set which climbed 252 compared to 236, and the bullion Silver Eagle, which leapt 400,000 after adding 320,000 in the last report.

Bullion Silver Eagle coins are sold to a small group of authorized buyers. Their latest purchases moved April’s sales total from 880,000 to 1,280,000. With that growth, the new 2012 total is 11,419,000.
