As indicated by the name of the strike, the reverse design of the coin showcases the elegantly simplistic image of a kangaroo against a setting sun.

This design was first seen on gold coins from the Royal Australian Mint back in 2007. The demand for them was so intense that a sell-out occurred in just four days. Two years later, the design was featured again, this time on a one ounce silver coin.

By 2010, a loyal customer following for the Kangaroo at Sunset design led the Mint to feature it on a more affordable option — a 1/5 ounce silver coin. The design and size (along with an extremely limited mintage) also proved desirable to collectors and the series has appeared annually from that point.

Since their debut, the Kangaroo at Sunset Silver Proof Coin has featured a mintage of 5,000. That same mintage is repeated again with the newest release.
