Silver Eagle bullion coins scored a new all-time sales record for a calendar year

After notching exceptionally strong sales in recent weeks, the individual option for the 2013-W Proof Silver Eagle sold out on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013.

It was not a surprise since historical individual sales of the annual numismatic coin had been somewhere in the 800,000 range in recent years.

As of Sunday, Nov. 10, sales of the proof Silver Eagle hit 862,845 after gaining 11,840. They jumped 29,613 during the prior week — the highest weekly total in nearly six months. The figure will increase when the next round of United States Mint sales stats are reported, which will include sales total through Tuesday.

Customers wanting the coin directly from the Mint will now have to buy the 2013 U.S. Mint Congratulations Set for $54.95. It includes one of the silver coins inside congratulatory-themed packaging. The set is $2 more than the price of the proof Silver Eagle when it sold out.

Silver Eagle Bullion Coins Hit Record

This week, on Tuesday, Nov. 12, the United States Mint reported that its Authorized Purchasers (APs) of American Silver Eagle bullion coins ordered their full weekly allocation of 500,000 coins, bringing total sales for calendar year 2013 to date to a record 40,175,000 ounces. This tops the previous annual record sales of 39,868,500 for all of 2011. Last year annual sales for the silver coins reached 33,742,500.

The Mint will issue its last weekly allocation of 2013-dated bullion Silver Eagles on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013. It will start accepting orders for 2014-dated bullion coins on Monday, Jan.13, 2014.
