An annual product since introduced in 1986, this year’s coin is unique because it bears a flat or smooth edge with an inscription marking its anniversary milestone. All prior-year issues have reeded edges.

The edging change is for this year only, as mandated by Congress under the multi-faceted Public Law 114-94 (FAST Act), and it only applies to collector versions like this proof and the upcoming uncirculated Silver Eagle. The U.S. Mint has been selling the bullion 2016 Silver Eagle since January and it retains the standard reeded edge. Normally the proofs are released not too much longer after the bullion version, but the edging change caused a delay because the U.S. Mint had to create special tooling.

These silver coins are one of the U.S. Mint’s most popular collector products. Unaudited figures show sales of 699,623 for last year’s individually sold 2015-W Proof American Eagle Silver Coin. No other collector product for the year has comparable numbers, and the U.S. Mint actually ended sales of last year’s coin early.
