American Silver Eagle Sales Continue to Soar

Two of three American Silver Eagle coin options surged beyond their previous weekly sales increases based on new United States Mint figures.

Collectors snapped up 24,261 of last year’s 2014-W Proof Silver Eagles compared to 19,582 sold in the preceding report. Since January 23, 2014 when the one ounce .999 fine silver coins went on sale, a total of 879,682 sold, as of Sunday. The coins are $48.95 each.

Demand for this year’s 2015-W Proof Silver Eagles also jumped, with 8,977 new orders. This increase follows the timid 309 advance noted during the prior week. To date, consumers have ordered 526,790 since the coins launched on January 2, 2015. Each is also $48.95.

For the bullion version Silver Eagles, which the Mint sells in bulk to a network of Authorized Purchasers but in limited amounts, sales decelerated only slightly. Another 909,500 were ordered during the first few days of this week in comparison to the cool 1,000,000 that were scooped up at the beginning of the month last week. Both weeks should eventually match, as the Mint has allocated a total week’s supply of 1 million for two straight weeks. With demand high — the coins are on a record annual sales pace, the Mint is rationing sales to prevent periods of suspensions.
