Without new silver coins released, 2013-W Proof American Silver Eagle coins returned to the top of the weekly best-selling list according to the latest round of U.S. Mint sales stats.

2013 Silver Eagle Bullion Coin

Sales of collector proof American Silver Eagle coins jumped, as did the bullion version to top the 16 million mark for the year — the earliest that has ever happened

Demand for Proof Silver Eagle coins has been swinging these last few weeks. Sales most recently jumped 20,741 between April 8 and April 15, which lifted their total to 430,156. The gains seen in the prior two sales reports were 4,208 and 25,605. Their reign this time will be short lived again, since their sales were temporarily suspended on Monday for product re-pricing as a result of plunging silver prices.

The second highest silver numismatic seller was the 2013-P Proof 5-Star Generals Silver Dollar. Generals George C. Marshall and Dwight D. Eisenhower grace the obverse of these commemoratives, and collectors ordered 7,170 more. In the sales stats shown below, the proofs outsold the uncirculated versions 7,170 to 2,583.

In bullion news, bullion Silver Eagle coins crossed 16 million for the year. U.S. Mint Authorized Purchasers took in 675,000 over the last seven days, resulting in a new year-to-date total of 16,610,000. In 2012, the bullion coins did not jump over 16 million until June 19. In 2011, which holds the annual sales record for the Silver Eagles at over 39.8 million, the 16 million level was not hit until May 9.
