Silver Prices Surge, Reaching Fresh ’09 Highs in N.Y. and London

Weekly Silver UpdateSilver prices surged to fresh 2009 highs in both London and New York with respective 5.9 percent and 2.5 percent gains, marking a third consecutive week of advances.

New York silver futures for December delivery closed Friday at $16.700 an ounce, rising 41.5 cents for the week. The metal reached a top of $17.015 which was the highest price since Aug. 5, 2008. Silver futures soared $1.47, or 9.9 percent, in New York last week.

London silver surged 94 cents on the week after a $1.41 gain the week prior. The metal was set to the highest point of the year at $16.89 an ounce. London silver is now up $6.10, or 56.5 percent this year as compared to the $10.79 closing price on Dec. 31, 2008.

"Silver has benefited from positive investment demand and a potential recovery in industrial demand" from signs of economic growth, according to Suki Cooper, an analyst at Barclays Capital in London who was quoted at Bloomberg.com.
