The Royal Canadian Mint announced last week that it has become the exclusive retailer for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Silver Coins produced by the South African Mint to celebrate the renowned international soccer tournament held in its country this year.

The FIFA World Cup has been held every four years since the first tournament kicked off in 1930, with the exception of an interruption in 1942 and 1946 as a result of WWII.

Millions around the world are following the games during the month-long tournament. Millions will watch as the winner is awarded the World Cup Trophy, which is a prominent design feature on the coins.

The coins also portray "typically South African symbols and imagery derived from the various host stadiums’ provincial coat-of arms and from the South African coat-of-arms," says the Canadian Mint.

One available product is the standalone 2 Rand 2010 silver crown that the Mint press release further describes as featuring:

"Grapes and the Qwagga, which represent the Western Cape, while the Eland and the Cape Aloe represent the Eastern Cape. The anchor under the Cape Dutch gable represents the maritime history of both provinces which border the Atlantic and Indian oceans."

The price of this coin is $89.95 CAD, which at the time of this writing is $87.46 US. It is limited to a worldwide mintage of 20,000, and has the following specifications:

  • 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper composition
  • Weighs 33.63 grams
  • 38.72 mm diameter
  • Serrated edge

Additionally, buyers have an option to purchase the FIFA World Cup Silver Premium Edition Set, which includes all five FIFA silver coins issued between 2006 and 2010, plus a 40 mm diameter silver medal. The set is limited to a mintage of 2,010 and has a Canadian price tag of $549.95 CAD or $534.72 US.

The silver coin may be ordered from around the world via the Royal Canadian Mint website at http://www.mint.ca/fifa. The sets are only available by calling 1-800-267-1871 (Canada), 1-800-268-6468 (US) or (613) 954-2626 (International).

Gold coin versions in 1/10 ounce and 1/4 ounce sizes are also available through the Mint’s website.
