The latest weekly U.S. Mint sales stats revealed 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle coin orders spiked despite their suspension on Wednesday, October 3.

2012-W American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

The 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle coin was the U.S. Mint’s best-selling numismatic product despite that it was unavailable for much of the week due to its suspension for re-pricing

Between Monday, October 1, and Monday, October 8, collectors raced to buy 20,359 proof Silver Eagle coins after picking up 12,133 during the final week of September. Given the suspension, all sales presumably came from October days of the 1st through the morning of the 3rd. Demand erupted, supported by rising silver prices that placed the coin’s melt values above $34 an ounce. Some collectors may have also expected a pending sales suspension that would eventually result in higher coin prices. With the latest burst, cumulative 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle coin sales hit 765,747 after having been on the market since April 12, 2012.

Not in collectors’ cross hairs pre-suspension were America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins. Their weekly gains naturally suffered during the short span of availability. Purchasers took in 1,082 of them in total versus 11,151 while the coin honoring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park launched.

The U.S. Mint resumed sales of all affected 13 silver products on Wednesday, October 10, at the expected higher prices. As mentioned in an earlier article, the products prices rose by $5 per ounce of silver they contained.

Getting back to the weekly outcomes, no other numismatic product could match the popularity of the Proof Silver Eagle coin. The 2012 Silver Proof Set was the second favorite among collectors with its sales total jumping by 3,179 in the latest round. In third place was the Making American History Coin & Currency Set, which has the 2012-S Proof Silver Eagle coin in it, added 1,049.

Bullion Silver Eagle coin sales finally hit the charts for October. Authorized Purchasers grabbed 1,233,000 of them since the last report and tilted 2012’s annual total to 27,028,000. While it took a few days for that to happen, October appears to be starting a little hotter than September did, given that last month at this time sales were only half as high. The question mark is that the increase happened on a single day, October 4. Normally strong months have many days of increases.
